Edinburgh Festival comedy king Nick Helm talks laptop-related laughs
To a comedian, the Edinburgh Festival is the equivalent of the Olympic Games. And while all sorts of prizes are on offer to the world's funnymen and women, it's fair to suggest that the Best Joke Of The Fringe gong is amongst the most prestigious accolades.
This year, said trophy was awarded to stand-up Nick Helm for the following gem of an observation: "The site said I needed a password eight characters long, so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs..."
"They say you should make jokes about what you know," says the effortlessly affable Helm. "So being someone who's spent years wrestling with their laptop[link], I thought that could prove a decent source of laughs." Not that Nick could claim to be the king of laptop comedy. That title must rest with the popular comedian and author Dave Gorman whose latest show takes the form of a PowerPoint presentation.
"Dave's a very special performer," says Helm whose hushed tones suggest he's a big fan of the man who scoured the world searching for other people called Dave Gorman. "There's a lot of gimmicky comedy on the circuit at the moment - people have become so desperate to standout from the crowd. But with Dave, he builds the technology into his shows so organically that what he does simply wouldn't be possible if he didn't have his laptop to hand. It's enough to send you down your local computer shop to ask if they've any special laptops deals on at the moment!"
