In the UK environmental factors typically revolve around what we are told. For example it is better to recycle and reuse. Well that’s a give in and even the Wombles in the 1970’s knew this. But in reality is a long life light bulb environmentally friendly? Is a car which runs on electricity environmentally friendly?
Low energy light bulbs contain many harmful substances including lead and phosphorous (not to be confused LED / light emitting diodes which are harmless). These lightbulbs you should never send for recycling because they are almost impossible to recycle. The chemicals are highly dangers if the bulb is compromised or broken and because of the levels of lead and phosphorous it is very dangerous especially for young children.
Electric powered vehicles have batteries which are also difficult to recycle and contain dangerous chemicals. It seems foolish to pursue this option but we are led to believe that it is the best option when it is clearly not. The options unfortunately for transport are very slim because the types of safe energy are still under development. Hydrogen is very safe but it still requires challenging extraction methods and uses natural resources. High speed flywheels use less energy but the safety features are still being refined. Water powered vehicles do exist but the technology has been kept from general consumption. Conspiracy or a nation protecting its future wealth?
When it comes to being environmentally friendly I would suggest a bicycle and LED light bulbs to clear your conscience. LED light bulbs have been around since I was a child and are being improved all the time. They can be made from vegetable oils with small amounts of natural resources and they last for years. When I suggest a bicycle I don’t mean buy one – Hire one. That way you can upgrade when you want, you don’t have to store it and if someone nicks it you are covered. www.ukforhire.co.uk
